Practical skills in Psychological Counseling: A 10 week course (online via Zoom)

Admissions are open for the ten week long Course in Practical Skills in Psychological Counseling. This is an intensive course aimed at training psychological counselors who wish to be general practitioners and counselors and for people interested in interpersonal skill development.

This is a skills based course for counseling psychology and clinical skills and provides a laboratory setting in which students master basic skill sets that are fundamental for effective communication, counseling and psychology. Among the basic skills essential to counseling psychology are the cultivation of attention, learning to ask questions, paraphrasing and encouraging, reflecting feeling and meaning, confrontation and empathy. A primary focus is on being more conscious and intentional in interpersonal communication and subsequently in the counseling process.

The goal of the course is to train individuals in developing necessary counseling skills to be psychological counselors or clinicians.

About the Course

This course is a basic skills course. The goal is to train psychological counselors by giving them hands on experience and knowledge in learning the fundamental and necessary skills needed as a therapist. In addition, participants will typically experience the enhancement of their interpersonal skills as well.

The course is intensive and involves indepth training, thus allowing students who complete the course the ability to understand themselves and others better, improve relationships in their life and practice counseling skills. Most of our eligible students (with the required qualifications to practice counseling, understand that counselor training is a process and thus choose to seek clinical supervision even after completion to ensure their continued growth and development as counselors.

Course Content

This course will cover:

  • Introduction to Counseling
  • Model of the Counseling Process
  • Foundational Counseling skills (to build a relationship, explore thoughts, feelings and behaviors)
  • Intermediate Counseling skills (skills to deepen exploration, gain awareness and develop insight, conceptualization)
  • Suicide risk assessment and crisis intervention
  • Counseling Ethics and Professional Standards of practice
  • Counseling Record keeping
  • Techniques and interventions for common presenting problems (stress, anxiety, depression, etc)
  • Introduction to Advanced Counseling skills (Challenging, interpretation, immediacy, skills for behavioral change and action, processing the relationship, conceptualizing and treatment planning, Awareness of self and culture )

Dates and Timings

The course begins on Sept 4 2024 with twice a week classes only. Classes are held on: Wednesday 430 to 730 pm, Saturday 9am to 12pm. Course ends on November 16 2024.
All classes are mandatory classes to attend. Students will be expected to complete reading assignments during the days before class time. The overall time requirements for this course will range from 10-12 hours of work each week (inclusive of online class and offline reading/homework).

Who should join

This course is open to all adults. It is designed for anyone choosing to learn interpersonal skills and/or becoming a psychological counselor and seeking professional skill training for the same.
Individuals who join could be (1) those who have little or no professional experience but wish to extend their knowledge of interpersonal and counseling skills and (2) psychology students, student counselors, counselors with degrees but no practical experience, healthcare professionals, teachers, social workers, managers, home-makers, human resource personnel and all others who wish to increase their interpersonal and counseling skills and apply them within their life in practice. 

We have no age limit for our course, so as long as you are emotionally mature and stable, we will consider you for the course.

Supervision and Practical Training

This course will offer clinical supervision of skills as a part of the course work and this is considered one of the most valuable aspects of HAP's counseling courses.

We ensure the highest possible quality of teaching and training by employing only people who have experience, expertise and a proven track record within the counseling field.

Our supervisors who help with skill development will provide the necessary support to all students to fulfill their aim, matching the students learning and training efforts. Please note that Dr. Diana Monteiro is assisted by several of her top notch counselors to help with teaching, clinical skill development and supervision of students work.

If a student is considered to be ready (having passed all requirements and supervisors approve) then we will give our students the opportunity to see real clients in counseling under supervision during the second part of the course. This allows students to get actual practical training and experience in seeing clients. The decision for students to see clients in made by the Director and senior faculty of the course.

Expectation of students

Students who join HAP are expected to adhere to the highest professional standards of practice. This includes but is not limited to, regular class attendance, punctuality, completion of assigned class work and assignments, excellent record keeping, and respect for everyone that they work with. Students may expect the same level of professionalism from their faculty and staff at the HAP. Attendance for all classes is required and cannot be adjusted unless prior permission of the Director is obtained.

We believe in open communication and in being genuine and model that for our students. Feedback is a two way process and our open door policy allows students to opportunity to discuss anything with us with the knowledge that we will be open to learning and growing together.

Students will undergo continual practical assessments (in class and supervision) and also complete examinations through the course which they have to pass (70% or higher) to receive the certificate of completion. Students who do not pass the course will receive a certificate of attendance.

What is REQUIRED:

(1) A laptop or desktop or large tablet in good working condition with ability for hi-speed internet and zoom. Phones will not be a good option for use during classes.
(2) Video has to be on and audio should be working for all classes.
(3) An open mind willing to learn and grow.
(4) Openness to experiences and growth as a person.

FEES: 

  • Rs. 20000/- (inclusive of 18% GST).
  • Fees are payable in full or in two equal installments of Rs. 10000/- each (1st due at the time of joining and the 2nd due Sept 30th 2024.)
  • Early bird special offer: Join by Aug 4th 2024 and pay only Rs. 16000/inclusive of 18% GST) (must be paid in full and not in installments)

  • Only payment of fees along with completion of the registration form confirms your seat in the course.
  • Course material: Will be provided electronically via email.

PLEASE NOTE: We have a strict no refund policy so fees once paid will not be refunded under any circumstances (except if the course is cancelled, so please join after making sure you want to do the course only. We will of course refund your payment if the course is cancelled for any reason. We require a minimum of 8 students for a batch.
