Experiential Course in Psychological Counseling: Basic and Intermediate Skills

Real client experience with intensive clinical supervision

Will be offered in Jan 2025 next

This is an intensive course aimed at giving real client experiences to newly trained psychological counselors who wish to be general practitioners of counseling and want to hone their counseling skills under intensive supervision.

About the Course

This is an experience gaining course, since the field of counseling and psychology has several training programs for skills with role-plays, but does not allow new counselors to gain experience seeing real clients. Thus, this course is useful for newly trained counselors wanting real life counseling experience.  Clients will be assigned to counselors and their work will be supervised by senior counselors/psychologists at HAP.

This course builds on the skills and knowledge developed in HAP's Practical Skills in Counseling Course. In this six month course, we will explore counselling from the perspective that we have an inner cognitive and emotional life that significantly affects how we live life short term and long term. From these perspectives, we will explore processes and ways to assist clients to become further empowered, self-aware, self-accepting and positive.

The goal of the course is to hone a counselor's skills in counseling as part of a comprehensive training that addresses the developmental trajectory and issues that commonly occur in people seeking counseling. This course will review the basics initially and then will impart knowledge of specific areas often seen in counseling. The focus will be two fold- 1) knowledge increase and skill building, 2) to delve deeper into oneself as a counselor and be a self-reflective practitioner. As with all HAP courses, this course will also address ethical, professional, and legal aspects of being a counselor in India.

Interested candidates may apply directly for this course by completing the interview process and registering. Please read the information below carefully prior to applying.

We have no age limit for our course, so as long as you are emotionally mature and stable, we will consider you for the course.
If you have a Master's but not the Practical skills course completed, please reach out to us and we will help you ascertain whether your existing knowledge base will be sufficient to begin this course.
If you are looking for experience in seeing clients and honing your existing skills with intensive clinical supervision, this is the right course for you.

What can you do after the course?

This course equips you with confidence in your ability to practice counseling and allows you to grow as a therapist. The field of counseling and psychology constantly has opportunities for jobs available, and those jobs look for experience in counseling. Since this course specifically targets experiences in counseling, you automatically become more marketable to workplaces looking for counselors. After successful completion of this course, you will be ready to do counseling in multiple settings.

We are often told by students who have trained with others that our courses are very different than other courses of this kind. We have since learned that we are the only training academy that offers the blend of theory and practical skills, in addition to world-class supervision, therefore most of our students state increased confidence and competence in counseling after course completion.
Please note that while there are no established rules or standards presently in the counseling area, we recommend that our students follow the HAP standards and thus ask that students who want to make counseling their formal career (part time or full time) complete a Master's degree in Psychology or an allied helping area. Without a formal completed degree, our course would not be useful in the future. Please note that with a formal degree, you might be lacking in skills, and thus we feel that our course gives you the chance to learn the needed skills, but we would still recommend getting a formal degree in the area before starting practice. If you have questions about this, call us and we can help you decide whether this course is right for you or not.
